Ranking functions provide a philosophically very well motivated formal representation of belief and uncertainty or, as one may say as well, of inductive or defeasible reasoning. In some ways it is very similar to probability theory, in some ways different and simpler. The talk explains what they are and how they work and in particular what the algorithms of inductive reasoning are and how they can be implemented in computer programs. The resulting implementation is quite similar to the theory of Bayesian nets that is so successfully applied in many areas.
