Interactive Visual Analysis: successful examples, elements of the general theory, and open problems

Dr. Gennady Andrienko, Fraunhofer AIS
Bonn, Germany

date & place

Room C252

The talk begins with an introductory demonstration of some techniques for interactive visual analysis, in particular, interactive maps, classification with the use of cumulative curves, and the parallel coordinates plot in application to a large dataset.

Then, the speaker briefly introduces the general principles of exploratory data analysis, which have been exposed in the book "Exploratory analysis of spatial and temporal data. A systematic approach" (authors: N. and G. Andrienko; Springer 2006).

In the concluding part, some complexities involved in visual data analysis are touched upon: complex and voluminous data, essential variety of tools, necessity of synthetic activities, which are poorly supported by existing tools, and ill-formulated analysis problems.
