A CG Perspective on Nature

One large area in computer graphics deals with natural phenomena. The vast complexity of nature at different scales from venation patters, branching structures, up to aggregation of forests from different species affects most stages of the visual parts of a cg production pipeline. In this talk I will present two projects dealing with modeling and rending of plants. Simulation based modeling is the idea of an efficient modeling technique based on particle simulation. Trajectories of particles naturally form the branching structure of a model instead of defining trees in terms of rewriting rules or with the help of parameter sets. The second part will be about advanced stochastic pruning to allow for real-time rendering of large botanical scenes. We use well know quality measures from machine learning (Precision and Recall) to predict optimal parameters for stochastic simplification algorithms.
