Efficient algorithms for rate-distortion optimized media streaming

We consider the problem of streaming multimedia content over a lossy packet network, such as the Internet. More specifically, we want to send a compressed media stream, such as audio or video, split into a set of usually interdependent data units to a receiver for instant playback. Our goal is to find transmission strategies that minimize the expected playback distortion given a certain transmission rate and the statistics (loss and delay) of the channel. We present algorithms that find such optimal transmission strategies and that are exact for different cases of dependencies between the data units. We compare our algorithms to previously proposed methods with respect to computational complexity and solution quality for the application of video streaming over the Internet.
