There is evidence that the genetic code allows functional overlapping genes. Tens of thousands overlapping gene candidates exist in each bacterial genome. In order to validate one of these candidates as a functional overlapping gene, time and cost-intensive wet lab experiments are needed. My focus in the DFG funded project "Finding new overlapping genes and their theory" is first to provide visual analytics solutions to efficiently apply experimental methods in the new area of overlapping gene detection and second to support the selection of promising candidates for validation experiments by automated (prediction) methods.
