## abstract

The main goal of sampling in computer graphics is to obtain a digital image from a continuous
image description. The unknown continuous image I is typically defined implicitly by the
scene's geometry, materials, and the model of light propagation. Two different kinds of sampling
are involved in rendering an image: image-space sampling which corresponds to evaluating I at
selected positions, and integration sampling which is required to calculate I(x) by solving the
rendering equation numerically.
The dissertation will focus on the image-space sampling and assume that I(x) can be computed
exactly.
