The metro map is a common and effective diagram typically used to visualise transportation networks. Traditionally, such diagrams are drawn manually, but in the last few years interest has grown in producing algorithms to draw them automatically. One of the key aesthetic properties of metro maps is that lines in the diagram are schematised; that is, they conform to a restricted set of directions. In this presentation, we detail two recent results in network schematisation. The first result is an algorithm for line simplification in restricted orientations, which can be applied directly on the train lines in a metro map. The second result involves producing schematisations of trees.
