project description

Pathfinder (XQuery Compilation)

Pathfinder is a research prototype to implement the W3C XQuery language, the standard query language for tomorrow's XML databases. From the variety of different approaches to evaluate XQuery, Pathfinder picks the 'relational' approach. By using a relational database back-end, Pathfinder transfers scalability and mature query processing algorithms into the XML domain.
The Pathfinder software is a compiler for XQuery, turning XQuery expressions into MIL Programs, executable on Pathfinder's relational database back-end MonetDB. Pathfinder has originally been developed by the Databases & Information Systems Group at the University of Konstanz, Germany. It is now a joint effort together with the Database Group at the University of Twente, The Netherlands, and the Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science Research (CWI) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
A first iteration of Pathfinder/MonetDB already provides a high-performance implementation of XQuery, which scales (almost) perfectly even with very large XML documents (handles XMark benchmark instances for XML document sizes up to 10 GB).
