project description

Efficient multimedia transmission over packet erasure channels

Real-time transmission of multimedia data over packet erasure channels like Internet imposes a challenge because Internet provides transportation service to the realtime data only in a best-effort manner and does not provide any guarantee to deliver the data packets in-time. In particular we focus on efficient transmission of high resolution three dimensional (3D) meshes and live video streaming. Data packet which are lost or arrive at the receiver beyond their presentation deadline impact the perceptual quality of the received multimedia significantly. Error-resilience against packet losses can be achieved through forward error control (FEC), automatic repeat request (ARQ), error resilient coding, error-concealment or any combination thereof.

While TCP/IP works well for non real-time data, e.g., file transfer, its relevance for real-time applications is questionable. This is the case, for example, when a user wants to download a 3D mesh in a certain time period or in live video streaming where each video frame has to be delivered and displayed in a certain time period for continuous playback. For such applications, forward error correction (FEC) may be a better candidate. We also investigate the potential benefits of recently proposed rateless or digital fountain codes for live video streaming applications.
