So dient z.

Androgyne and Power. Androgyne as a Figure of the Third in the Soviet Culture of the 1930s

Project summary

The aim of this project is to interpret the representation of the androgynous body and its function as a figure of the third in the Soviet culture of the 1930s. The core of the project is the phenomenon of androgyne (or, in a broader sense, the concept of androgyny), and its gender aspects, as analyzed in particular examples of Soviet cinematography, political posters, art and literature.

One of the goals is to demonstrate the meaning of androgynous concepts in the Soviet context and to explain their appearance in the 1930s. From a historical perspective, the very first appearance of an androgyne is in the archaic mythology, either perceived as an aesthetic ideal, or as a symbol of the unconventional other – that is, of a devastating, fear inspiring power. In my dissertation, I would like to primarily analyze the role of androgyne in connection with political power. The significant questions are: What are the inter-relations between the aspects of gender and power and how did their function change over the time. What roles did the concepts of androgyny play in the process of formation of political power? And why did Soviet power need specifically androgynous concepts in the period of its establishment?

In this context, it is highly interesting that most androgynous figures in the visual art of this period are women. In Soviet political posters of the 1930s, women were depicted in contrast to the 1920s with male attributes referring to a new type of woman. Such posters reflect new roles for women. Some gender and sociological studies devoted to this time period tend to explain this as a "double burden", pointing to the dual role confronting women. On the one hand, she had to take on traditionally “male” functions, and on the other hand she had to continually fulfill traditionally female responsibilities.

We can therefore analyze the development of an androgynous type in Stalinist art in relation to its relevance for a unique structuring of gender difference in political subjects and their representation by political powers. Its appearance is closely connected with new political aims such as the first Five-Year Plan). Soviet citizens were expected to join the working collectives (particularly in the factories), regardless of their sex. This can be seen, for example, in V. Kulagina’s poster (1930) agitating for women to work in the factories, that is to say, to become actively involved in the process of the country’s industrialization. This is one example of how Soviet political power implies a specific concept of gender.

If we ask ourselves what functions androgynes have as figures of the third in the culture of Stalin era, we may construct two triads. In the first, the androgyne is the third element between man and woman.

If however we examine this triangulation through the prism of political power, we may construct a second triad in which the androgyne is a third figure between political Power (Stalin) and the Nation. This concept allows us to view the phenomenon of androgyny not only as a concept of “gender difference”, but further in a broader sense as an object of various transitional forms. In opposition to the Nation, androgyne possesses a transformative function. It depicts a transition between the old and the new world, between individual and collective, or between an old and a new type of person.

In the relation between political power and the nation, androgyne takes the place of a third element in a triad. It helps power in the process of integrating and institutionalizing individuals, for example in the formation of such structures as class, collective-farms or collectives.
