Overview

The IS³ Master Study is characterized by two main factors:

  1. it offers a holistic understanding of sport sciences at an advanced level.
  2. it allows students to individually set specializations in four ways:
      1. Four courses of specialized studies in sport sciences;
      2. Choice of courses in supplementary studies;
      3. Choice of fields of concentration for the final examination;
      4. Choice of topic of the Master thesis.
IS³ offers a highly competitive cost structure, as the study fees for the Master Study are only around 2000€ for four semesters.

1. Purpose of the Study and Professional Fields

The M.A. study qualifies students for a variety of scientifically oriented professional fields in the areas of sport, sport education and sport sciences. The M.A. study is grounded particularly in the scientific methods and themes of the subject area, in addition to didactical/methodological as well as practical knowledge and experiences. The study is geared towards discussing the innovations made in sport sciences in regard to current needs and to the transfer of the scientific results to practice.

The M.A. study has been designed to enable graduates of the course to mainly work in sport science institutions and research units or to decide to go on to a further scientific qualification (Ph.D.). This in turn will allow them to work in scientifically oriented professions.

With all of this in mind, the purpose of the M.A. study can be summarized in the following way. This list is not exhaustive - there are many more potential areas of engagement for our graduates.

  • Insight into the state of the art of sport sciences in Germany.
  • Exposure to a holistic view of sport sciences by dealing with sub-disciplines of natural science, social science and cultural studies as well as with examples of particular areas of sport sciences.
  • The establishment of a relationship with a professional field within the offered specializations.
  • The acquisition of high study efficiency due to the combination of distance education and residence in the first year. This gives students the opportunity to study using various didactic approaches (preparatory and obligatory literature, usage of new information technology, compact seminars, small groups, learning objectives oriented examinations with preparation time etc.).
  • The opportunity to compare sport sciences in Germany and the respective home country.
  • The acquisition of knowledge about both published academic material and real-life organizations and/or institutions in sport sciences.
  • The opportunity to open new horizons - an indispensable asset in a globalized world.
  • The opportunity to acquire the foundations of German language skills at the university's specialized language learning centre.
  • The opportunity to participate in the cultural programme offered by the International Office of the University of Konstanz in Germany.
  • The opportunity to make connections or partnerships, respectively exchange programmes.
  • The acquisition of skills and knowledge necessary for undertaking a Ph.D. either in Germany or in another country.

The IS³ at the University of Konstanz takes place in an attractive environment with versatile possibilities for recreation. While aquatic sports are particularly attractive in the summer months, the winter months offer the chance to explore the neighbouring Swiss and Austrian Alps for alpine sports activities.

All courses and examinations are conducted in English.
Further information about the study besides the informations on this website can be seen at the website of the University of Konstanz.
